THE CHALLENGE
Printpack’s high hourly employee turnover was negatively impacting their production line
At Printpack, 75% of the workforce is hourly. Because of COVID, the company was hit hard by high turnover, impacting its ability to deliver packaging to customers.
Printpack needed a way to understand why people were leaving so it could pivot its hiring and retention strategies. At the time Printpack had Workday, but found it difficult to get useful data out of the system to help pinpoint and solve its turnover problem.
Printpack’s HR Data & Analytics Manager, Brandon Fox, said, “Workday lacked the ability to easily present and combine all relevant HR data. I could see a 12-month rolling turnover for all my locations; however, when someone asked to slice the data by employees who've only been here one to two years, we would have to go back and it would take a few days to rechart everything," he explained. "What we've really loved with Visier is that all the data can be pulled together and analyzed in one spot—with a couple of clicks, everyone has full visibility.”
Next, Printpack knew that once they put programs into place to combat the turnover issues, they would need a system that could evaluate the effectiveness of these initiatives.
Having the data at our fingertips to see what was working or not from the programs we were rolling out to reduce turnover was extremely helpful, particularly at each manufacturing location. For example, what was effective in Grand Prairie, Texas may not work in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. It was a huge motivator to be able to monitor at the local level which programs were making a positive impact.

THE SOLUTION
Visier harmonizes all HR data for in-depth analysis
In 2022, Printpack enabled Visier as its complete people analytics solution. Fox shared, “We did consider building an in-house people analytic solution; however, we quickly realized there were too many convoluted and complicated requirements that came with connecting our data in Workday to our data warehouse environment. Additionally, we did evaluate other vendors, but after doing our due diligence we selected Visier.”
The result has been a single source of reliable truth: “Visier has increased our trust in our HR data,” said Fox. “We are able to validate that the data is accurate where previously, we would spend time in a meeting talking about why your spreadsheet numbers are different from mine.”
Printpack is now able to validate that everyone is looking at the same charts with standardized definitions. Users can slice and dice the data without having to wait for the people analytics team to get through a backlog of requests.
Most importantly, the company can retrieve data from Workday in a format more usable for analysis. Now, the team can easily see the direct impact of their turnover reduction incentive program and they can use Visier to benchmark all of Printpack’s locations. The current goal is to reduce turnover by 5% at each location.
We wanted business leaders to know that people analytics isn't just for HR, it's a business investment. With this tool we are able to see the impact of our workforce on our business as our profitability was negatively affected from higher turnover rates.

THE OUTCOME
Reduction in hourly staff turnover across all factories by one-third
With Visier implemented, Printpack was able to spot where the retention issue was most prevalent. They quickly identified that the employees in the zero-to-one-year tenure grouping were leaving at faster rates.
They also were able to:
- Easily compare turnover rates by location within minutes
- Understand the levers for employee retention including compensation and benefits packages and how onboarding affects a new associate coming into the organization
- Run productivity calculations e.g. when a line staff member will be fully productive and the impact on revenue
- Benchmark each location to set internal standards
- Prioritize internal growth with internal mobility and promotions for overall increased employee satisfaction
